Welcome to the Reception Class web page.

Come and have a look at all the exciting things we are doing in the Reception Class!

Summer Term

Beach Art

We looked at some examples of art work using only natural resources. We decided to use this idea to create some Beach Art pictures.

Can you see what we have used?

Can you spot a crab, a shark, an octopus, a fish, a turtle , a whale or a jellyfish?

Balance Bikes

We had an opportunity to practice our skills on the balance bikes. We wanted to go outside but the weather was cold and wet so we used the school hall. We had to wear helmets to protect our heads. We practiced scooting using small steps and big strides. Then we had to glide on the bikes, lifting our feet up off the floor. We then had to ride around some cones that were put out on the hall floor. We had great fun and most of us had improved so much from when we first had a go in the Autumn Term

Making Pizza

We listened to a story called The Little Red Hen Makes Pizza. We decided to have a go at making our own pizzas. We thought about what we would need to buy in order to make the pizzas. Mrs Frayling made a shopping list and went out to buy the ingredients. Everyone made their own pizza and then we ate them. Very tasty!

SPRING TERM

The Magic Postman

Today we went into the hall to watch a performance of The Magic Postman. He played on his accordion and sang some songs. We were able to join in with some of them. He did some magic tricks for us. He was very clever and we wondered how he did the magic. He told us a story  too. Some of our parents came along to watch the show with us. Everyone had a lot of fun!

The Magic Beans

We found some packets of Magic Beans today. We decided to plant them in soil in some pots. We watered them and left them in our classroom overnight.

The next day when we came to school we saw that the Magic Beans had grown into Lollipop Trees.

Here are some of the pieces of writing that we did about this. We are learning to

Say the sentence we want to write.

        Break the sentence into words.

Segment the sounds we can hear in each of the words.

Link these sounds to letter shapes.

We are trying hard to apply the phonics that we know to our writing.

John McCorkell

A man called John McCorkell came to our school today. He lives with a disability and he wanted to talk to us about his life. He told us about the things he has achieved like playing wheelchair basketball and learning to drive a car. It took him two years of practise before he was able to score a basketball. He explained that it was very important not to give up when things are hard to achieve but to keep on trying.

World Book Day

We missed World Book Day because of the snow. We decided to rearrange it for the following week as we had all prepared our outfits. Here are the photographs of the children dressed as their favourite book characters.

Can you identify who they are dressed up as?

 Chicks

Our Nursery Class hatched some chicks. We borrowed some of the chicks and looked after them in our classroom. We could hold them if we wanted to. They were soft and fluffy. Some of them were a bit wriggly too. They made loud cheeping noises.

AUTUMN TERM

   Healthy Foods

We have been learning about foods that are good for us. We noticed that foods come in lots of different colours. We made a healthy food rainbow display.

Picture 1

Red food is good for the heart.

Tomatoes, strawberries and cherries.

Orange food is good for our eyes.

Oranges, peaches and apricots.

Yellow food is good for our skin.

Bananas, lemons and sweetcorn.

Green food is good for our whole body.

Grapes, spinach and peppers.

Blue and purple foods are good for the brain.

Blueberries, blackberries and plums.

Fruit Kebabs

We made some fruit kebabs. We used grapes, oranges, strawberries and bananas. We had to be so careful cutting up the fruit. We then threaded the fruits onto a skewer and we tasted them. We thought about words to describe the fruits.

Juicy   Tasty   Wet   Squashy   Sweet  Healthy

We did not put in fizzy drinks with lots of sugar in. We did not put in cakes and sweets.

Have a look at our lunch boxes.

What would you put in yours?

Nocturnal Animals

We have been learning about what happens when we are asleep. We know lots. of animals are awake at night time. Bats, foxes, owls, hedgehogs, mice, and badgers. These animals are nocturnal.

Some have big eyes to help them see in the dark.

Some have a good sense of smell to help them find their food.

Some have big ears to help them hear very quiet sounds.

We made a display for the hall.

Balance Bikes

We took part in a workshop called Go-Bike-Go. Some Mums, Dads and Grandparents came to help us. We played some games at first to help us prepare to ride the bikes. They were to develop some core skills such as balance, grip, step and looking. Then we put on the cycle helmets and got on the bikes. We learned to scoot, stride and glide. We found out how to speed up and slow down, and how to travel in different directions. We also found out how to safely get on and off our bikes.

Christmas

We went down to the Marina in Mirfield where we saw Santa arrive on a barge. We all got to talk to him and tell him what we wanted for Christmas. He gave us a present which we opened when we got back to school. We went into the cafe and had a drink and a snack. We coloured pictures and made our own badges.
