Welcome to the Reception Class web page.
Come and have a look at all the exciting things we are doing in the Reception Class!
Class of 2016-17
Here is a photograph of the Reception Class who started school in September 2016.
In Reception Class we may come home sometimes with a dirty school uniform. Please have a look at our display in the cloakroom area of our classroom which will help to explain why this sometimes happens.
We have a fantastic time in our outdoor area. We practice our physical skills and learn about our environment. We find out how things work and why things happen.
Here are a few examples of the things we do:-
The Activity Area.
In the Activity Area we develop our creative skills, learning about colours, textures and how to use different materials and tools. We can paint and print. We investigate in the sand and water. We play with the dough and build models.
We learn to use our imagination and practice things we have seen other people do in lots of different ways. We use small world toys such as the garage or farm. We build train tracks and go on imaginary journeys. We role play in the home bay. We build models using construction kits and we retell stories.
We used the parachute to play team games out on the field. Everyone worked together to lift the parachute up and down in unison. Next we put a ball on top and tried hard to keep it moving without it falling off. Then we played Cat and Mouse. The mouse crawled under the parachute and the cat had to try to find the mouse by crawling on top. Everyone tried to help the mouse escape by shaking the parachute to hide it.
Physical Education with Pennine Sports.
This half term we have been practicing moving in lots of different ways. We have moved in different directions, at different speeds and at different heights.....high and low and fast and slow. We have made balances on the floor, mats and benches using different body parts. Our balances have been tall, long or wide. Sometimes we balanced on big areas of our body and sometimes on tiny points.
Playing the Drums.
We used the drums today to find out how to make lots of different sounds. We made loud sounds and quiet sounds. We made fast sounds and slow sounds. We played with different parts of our hands to make the different sounds. We pretended we were different animals travelling through the jungle. The slow heavy elephant, the snappy crocodile, the fast cheetah and the slow slithery snake. It was a lot of fun!
Making Fruit Kebabs.
Today we talked about healthy eating. We know how good fruit is for us. We looked at some different fruits and touched their skin and described their textures. We cut them open and looked at the inside of the fruit. We tried to describe their colour, smell and taste. Then we made some fruit kebabs. Delicious!
World Book Day
On World Book Day we all dressed up as our favourite book characters.
Do you know who we are?
We used the I-Pad to create our drawings.
We have been investigating MiniBeasts this half term.
We made a Wormery, putting in layers of soil, sand and leaf litter. We collected a few worms and carefully placed them inside our wormery. We added some water and watched them every day. We could see them making burrows in the soil and moving up and down. At the end of our topic we released them into our outdoor area. We were amazed at how fat and long they had grown!
We sent off for a ladybird breeding kit. We received a dish called a Vivarium, some larvae and the food we would need. We were shocked at how tiny the ladybirds were. They just looked like specks of dust! We placed the food and ladybirds onto a piece of card that we had folded into a zigzag shape inside the vivarium. We watched the ladybirds grow longer and develop legs. They did not look like ladybirds at all as they were long and thin. Then at last we saw some yellow spots appear and their shape became more rounded. Then at last we saw them change to a red colour. Now we had to feed them aphids. On the last day of term we released them into our bug hotel.
We sent off for some caterpillars so we could watch them become butterflies. We had 5 caterpillars and we saw them grow bigger and bigger. Then we watched as they all began to make their own chrysalis. They made a curled shape on the lid of the box. We were looking forward to seeing the butterflies emerge but unfortunately this happened while we were on holiday from school. Mrs Holdt took a photograph for us so we could see the butterflies.
We bought some pots for our outdoor area. We planted some flowers that would attract butterflies to our area. We planted lavender, cornflowers, clover, marjaram and verbena. We looked after our plants, making sure we watered them every day.
We decided to convert our fairy house into a hotel for Minibeasts to live in. We put in some bamboo sticks, pebbles, sticks and leaves. We hoped it would be a place where lots of creatures would want to live. We have kept a close watch on our hotel and we have seen woodlice, spiders, centipedes and slugs in there.
We made some pictures using natural materials. We worked in
pairs to create pictures of things you might find at the seaside. Have a look at our work and see if you can tell what we made.
Alice in Wonderland
For our treat at the end of term we watched a production of Alice in Wonderland in our School Hall. We had a great time. Here are some pictures taken during the performance.
Goodbye and Good Luck!
We have now reached the end of the School Year and it is time for our Reception Class to move on into Year 1. You have been a fantastic class and all the staff wish everyone a happy holiday.
